What to do?

Postby Knox on Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:55 am

I am really starting to resent having to get up and go to work in the mornings and would ideally love to jack it in and become am international man of leisure. Unfortunately I have commitments and stuff that means I can't just throw in the towel and get out of the rat race. I have been working at Brixton Prison for over 2 years and I have never worked in such a grim place its untrue, added to this that I actually live in North Herts and have a daily 4-5 hour round trip to make doesn't really appease my loathing of this place.

Anyways enough of my ranting, What I really need is some advice on where I go from here. I am due a £1200 tax rebate and would really like to use it to get some sort of business going. I realise its not a huge sum but it will hopefully be enough for me to get a step up and start small.

I use to work in the motor industry before I went to uni and am thinking about getting back into that but not in terms of garages etc. I have done a few custom installs (TVs in dash and boot builds etc) so am considering that, also I have noticed that there aren't many companies offering off the shelf speaker pods for OEM fitment. I have also considered going the dent removal/small repairs route but I'm not sure on the markets at the minute.

Therefore I need some advice/opinions on which way to go. Obviously if you have any other suggestions I would be grateful for those as well.

Thanks in advance

i would say with the ideas you have is look around at what your area and where you would be willing to travel/set up, and judge how much market there would be for what you want to do.
boot builds etc only appeal to a certain market, and theres things agaisnt thta such as cost, if there expensive, your only have a small market for it, which could be depleted in a short space of time, and that can also apply to other things, so you need to find something your area doesnt have buts needed, or can make you profit.

i will say for starting out, do it part time and have a part time job to bring money in still when the business is slow or not making anything

Thats good advice from Jayrs

I will add that 3 years ago I worked for a company called Gamestation, some may know of these some may not. I worked there for 7 years working my way up to manager, after 6 and a half years I put in for a transfer to a store that was 19 miles away from home, bit further commute but I wanted a change of scenery. It turned out it wasn't the shop I was working in that was the problem it was the job. I too had/have commitments but the best day of my working life was leaving that job.

I use to get up in the mornings and cry over breakfast because I had to go to that place, some days I would sit in the office from start to finish because I couldnt face serving people or sorting the shop out. I left, had 6 months off work and started work as a crane operator (completely different line of work I know lol) but if it really does get to you then the best thing to do is go because you will get to the point where you wont look for another job and you will stay in the one that you hate. Theres no better incentive for looking for a job than being without one. Admittedly I had to do the odd job here and there in the 6 months I was off (delivering/decorating/fixing cars) but it got me through until I decided what I wanted to do.

Hope this helps in some way

i know the feeling of hating a job, its not nice, but i dont do it no more.
you gotta be happy in your work, after all you spend most of you life at work so you have to do what you can to do something you will enjoy.
i would sooner work for min wage doing a job i like, than for £20 a hour doing a job i hate
