What to tweak and what not to tweak?

Postby Oggster on Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:43 pm

I've just purchased my first fiesta RST, totally standard 1990 model(white), I just wondered if I could get some hints and tips on what to modify and upgrade, I'm going to keep it as standard looking as I can (I prefer the look). Just want to upgrade the brakes engine and running gear thats all..
Anyone point me in the right direction?
Cheers

I want good braking seen as the standard ones are rubbish... And a bit more power without killing the engine and spinning the wheels up.
Any thoughts?

You need Escort RS2000 discs and calipers if you want to keep the original alloys.

I'd be spending my money on the chassis over more power.

Good quality suspension kit such as Koni,Poly bush everything to get rid of all the knackered old rubber bushes,Maybe fit an LSD to the box and then if i had any money left i'd work on the engine

I was in the same position as you, first things I did was to get a induction kit and a proper exhaust. I noticed it's a bit torquier lower down and revs better higher up.

My next modification will to be to get a set of Koni adjustables.

For the brakes you will be limited to the escort RS2000 under the standard rims, however I just replaced the old items with new standard items and the braking is much better now.

My engine seems to be in good condition so im not going to touch it in terms of modifying components, going T3, chip, upping boost etc... If you are intresting in modifying the engine have a look at the haynes CVH book :)

Thanks for that..... :P
Are the RS2000 brakes a direct replacement for the standards brakes?

Chucking the ABS in the bin will help the brakes no end. Good quality pads are a must as are discs (not your local motorfactor £30 jobbies). A subtle drop in suspension ride height is advisable to stiffen it up and lessen body roll. As said above an LSD gearbox to help put the power down would be a wise investment (Ford should have had an LSD from new  ). Power wise a nice exhaust like a Magnex with a 3" tailpipe will keep things looking normal. From here a 165 chip and a session on the rollers should give you a nice nippy hatch

couldn't agree more, changed mine and its the best thing i have ever done to my car. transforms its drivability and just the amount of power you can get down through corners. makes the car 100% better to drive and thats with std shocks, springs, brakes, wheels, pretty much everything :D

I run crappy £25 motorfactor discs on my fiesta along with race pads for track use and after a few laps im out brakeing most cars with expensive discs etc.
Infact my cheap discs last a lot longer than expensive grooved discs :P
