XR/RS skirts

Just got a set of XR2i/RST skirts and arches, but they are fibreglass. On holding them against my car, the arches look OK but the sirts look like they will leave a big gap between them and the car. Do they need 2 B modded 2 fit? I so how?? Will it look OK in the end???

Where did you get them from?

Are the skirts separate pieces? They have some flexibility, so you should be able to squeeze them on and with the help of two people holding them in place, bolt or pop-rivet them, and then fill along the edges.

I HATE fibreglass, and don't ever want to touch it again - I bought a Mondeo spoiler and RS2000 sideskirts - the skirts were 1/2in too short and the MOndeo spoiler needed so much work to get on it was an absolute feckin' joke. I wish you all the luck in the world, m8!

Got them from Autotint Design. Arches/skirts are all separate pieces (6 in total) I'm NOT going to fit them, bodyshop will, just hope they won't charge too much, as they seem totally wrong size.

THINK they are stick on, as I can't see any rod. What exactly would a threaded rod look like?? (Soz 4 being thick!!)

I think he means the bolts moulded into them to push through the bolt holes above the arches - you get these on genuine parts, but it's extremely rare for comparatively cheap glass fibre kits to have these, as they rarely line up correctly from experience

Well, definately hasn't got anything like that. Absolutly nothing to fix it on with at all. Took them to the garage today, and the mechanic didn't look too impressed with them either. I've got the phone no. of his bodywork man, and am gonna see what he has to say. Would most probably be better if I bought a second hand set of genuine Ford ones???

Actually, this could be a blessing in disguise.
Ya see, the Ford ones are actually high density fowm (like steering wheels) covered in a couple of mm of rubber. The GRP ones tend to be a lot stiffer once mounted, so there's nothing to stop you from drilling your own holes, fitting them, and then using Isopon Metalik filler (aluminium P38 - same cost) to smooth it all into the bodywork. The finish you will then get, if you take your time and accept it will be messy and annoyingly slow, will be absolutely concours.

Since you've gone this far, you might as well go that bit further and make the real deal, eh???

Big Fat Al

Yeah, I'll have to ask the bodyshop about that. Won't do it myself though, as I would just make a mess out of it

Thanks,
Louise

Hi Louise! I didn't realise it's you. How's the car? I'm still up for doing the clocks, although it's looking unlikely I'm gonna have the money to travel down now. I'll do a last check tomorrow to see what screws hold the rev counter in the pod - I think it's just a small Torx bit, which I've got, and then I'll have a cuppa and work out a cunning plan to do this swap.

Big Fat Al

Ps I have a funny feeling they are all the same units, but there could well be a switch or jumper inside them which giverns their behaviour. I'll mail you when I know more.

I don't think the skirts minus the arches would look too hot. What about the BMW M3-style skirts? These are (loosely) what the Zetec-S skirts are based on, and are more noticeable. They are available for about the £110 mark from CC Motorsport.

Typically, your best bet is to use Sikaflex bonder for skirts, AS WELL AS riveting the undersides (if convenient) or, better, bolting. For example, the Zetec-S has bolts along the bottom, and I believe two at either end. You could use countersunk allen bolts instead at the ends - these would also look quite trick anodised in silver, blue, etc.

Ooooh, errm... umm... well Ossifer, you see...

My car's still off the road (something to do with having no bloody money - as usual having spent it all on making the damn thing work) so I'm not actually insured (me mum rang the company and let it slip I had put some behemoth of an engine in and they promptly cancelled cover stating that the chassis would not be strong enough. Errm, hello???).

Anyway, I don't know yet, but I think I'm gonna be looking at the sharp end of £1000. If you get a good quote, let me know.

well, a 1.6s would only cost about £50 more than i'm paying now, but i'm not sure what it'll be like if i drop a 1600 into mine. my insurance is up in april so i'll have to see then
i'd swap it for a 1.6s but i've just had to fork out £400 on mine and my tax and mot is up at the same time as my insurance!
besides, sports are all sh@gged and mines shiny mercury grey!
