xr2 rebuild 2 litre made me mind up now 22/3/12
xr2 rebuild 2 litre made me mind up now 22/3/12
got a new car, well, another car, the rs is being kept, NOT replaced.
been wanting another xr2 for a couple years now, takes me back to my youth, well im only 27 mut you know what i mean, my very first car was a b reg xr2 which i got a week before passing my test in july 97, kept her till about may/june 98 then got second xr2 which was red, kept her untill oct 98 then i got my FRST in the november 98 and have had the rs ever since, with different cars coming and going, like loads of xr2 which ended up as breakers or that but always wanted another, so yesterday (30th oct) i picked it up:)
guy cashed the tax in before i could offer to buy it so it came with no tax, the 1-2 months mot he thought it had turned out to be 2 days when he found the MOT cert which means its out today so basiscly no tax or MOT
i paid £250 for it, would liked to of got it a bit cheaper but i lost out on 1 months back for £50 and the other one i looked at for £150 had no T&T and was focked, needed a new front end due to rust, and 2 doors and was rusty on the roof etc, and this ones not bad.
for those in the know, in the 80's ford suffered with bad rot problems sdue to cheap steel being used in spain, this being a C plate 85, was built with the better steel so isnt bad, its not mint and i didnt expect to find mint for what i was willing to pay but its very solid and gen in a lot better nick that i expected, even the bonnet dont have any rust
i havent had it up and looked over it yet but i belive there is minor work for the MOT needed, welding is one , but tell me a MK2 that hasnt needed welding
so plan is, get it moted next week, taxed, change the insurance over that i still got running on my last car and use here as a driver till rs is done then its project time with it, looks will be kept std with the wheels being changed to the ones that are on my rs now, and them wheel were got in the first place for my last red xr2
engine wise, a 2 litre zetec, no turbo not throttle bodies etc etc, just a 2 litre zetec pulled out and put in, if the mondeo inlet dont fit which im expecting it not to, i shall make a custom one as my machine shop will be up and running but then, (i hope) but thats way off, for now, do the repairs for mot, oil and filter change, cam belt change and renew the rocker cover gasket as its pi$$ing oil out.
updates as and when
shes a driver, but was towed due to manifold gasket leak (loud!) and no tax or MOT
pics,
what crap did i find in the car
from the glove box
auto glym, 1 pot near empy other not much more, t cut 3/4 full
in the boot, hmm 2 spent shot gun shells
and a nice minging mouldy sock that used to be white..... i think
i forgot to get a pic of the mc flurry cut complete with spoon tucked under the corner of the back seat whioch was mouldy too
thats a point, i fogot to take it out
this was my first xr2, B reg, as you see it is as i got it, all i done was added the spots under the bumper, dont ask why cos i dunno my self
second car, which came on steels but got graced with brand new alloys (which then went on my rs and will come off and go om new xr2)

i wouldnt in terms or power and that, but if i come to sell it one day it would be worth more as a cvh xr2 then a 2 litre beast
i want some quad lights for it now, always wanted quad lights since the first time i saw them in 98

nice, always loved mk2's. I had a 1.1 as my first car, wish I'd never sold it as it was mint - my son cried when I sold it! He still remembers it now, even though he was only 3 when it went

nope, nothing like that, ill leave it as it is, then the 2 litre zetec will take the cvh's place, so exhaust and K&N would be a waste

Tres cool. If I were you, I'd keep it looking standard this time though - I'm personally not a fan of colour-coded bits on XR2s.
My name is Alex. I used to have a Capri. I don't anymore. But I'm still called Capri.

she will be left looking std apart from different alloys, pepper pots have never been that great for me
i didnt colour code the white one, it came like it, with a better set of wheels it would of looked better but hey, first car and all that it was great at the time, and i was the first person on the isle of wight to put clear front indicators on a mk2 too

Looks nice
White is now my favourite XR2 colour again
Looks a good base, as long as its fairly solid you should be ok mate.
Yet more pictures of you not smiling
White will always be my favourite colour for FRSTs

you cant go back on your quote now mate
its seems nice and solid, the worst bit ive found so far is in the boot behind the washer bottle, a very common place for rot on the mk2 no matter what year.
looks like i may get a chance to have a look over it tomorrow, but i got to give my dad a hand putting a fence up in his garden so depending on time and all that.

yeah another red one, the red army, i like that
you will all learn one day, just wait and see if ya dont
yeah i checked it over, not a full 100% check but i checked the hot spots, inner wings, front chassie box sections inc in the wheel arch, boot floor, the side near the trailing arms (mk2 owners will knw where i mean) and that.
floor looks ok, but i expect welding to be done.
nothing apart from getting it on the road will happen with it till the rs is done, to which another (hopfully not 2 years) project begins

Re: my new run around, and my next project, mk2 xr2
ram, shes a classic
matt, as ive said, it wont be done as a project untill the RS is finished
niracka i got a piper cross cone filter left over from my rs now so will use that
right, today i got the front up, disc and pads are good, ball joints seem to be good apart from small split in the rubber on one, which isnt a prob i got spare rubbers
steering rack and track rond ends are good as is the tie bar bushes
drivers shock is 110% fcuked! shock moves forwards and back and the piston stays still so thats truely buggered oh and it has a lowering spring on (i belive) where as the passanger one dont, but i shall replace both shocks (as your ment to anyway) and i think the passanger ones seen better days anyway.
the rear shock are not leaking, but it dont mean they aint buggered so will remove and check them later. and also check out the trailing arms and the ARB as there is a knocking on the passanger back end when the front is bounced
rust wise, its fairly good, the floor has a small patch needed on passanger side up front, no hole but its seperated a tiny bit floor to bulk head metal and has a rusty patch about the size of a £2 coin.
bit needed on passanger front chassie box section in both front arches, again nothing major but needs doing.
both rear archs have rotted at the bottoms of the rear quater panles, and just in front, or behind if you want, the trailing arms at the back on the drivers side it has rusted a tad, hole about the size of a £1 coin, but will patch the whole area as it will go further in time, again nothing major.
some grotty bits on the inner wings too but nothing major, no holes just rusty bits even after proding no hole, so its fairly solid but will still need plating (mot)
oh and the batter tray and under it has rotted out, and ford no longer do battery trays for the mk2, so if i cant get a mk2 one or there a lot of money i shall fit the tray from a mk3 fiesta.
the rot on the car is in all the common places for a mk2, in fact i was expecting some more rot TBH but all along the sills/floor and including the back of the floor,is as solid now as the day it was sold with not even so much as a blister in the under seal which was a shock but a good shock
so over all its not too bad, i did check it over before i bought it but it was a quick check over in the major places and untill you get a car in the air and have a full going over you cant 100% see it all, but for what its got i expected and still think it was a good buy.
just shows how good the steel used in the early ones was compaired to the crap steel used in spain in the later 80's.
this is not a restro on this right now, this is MOT work that has to be done to get it on the road and thats all i shall be doing to it for the time being, once summer comes and the rs is finished i shall start "project 2 litre xr2" in full, but as i say for now its MOT work only.
just a shame there aint many if any in scrappies now days, i could do with some bits like head lights. although in true "jayrs" fashion i do have a mk2 fiesta spares still, inc a head light (bet its the wrong one to what i need though), although i did get shot of a load few years back which im now wishing i hadnt, but no matter

Re: my new run around, and my next project, mk2 xr2
no real update as sush, welding is being done, but not finished yet, the front end will be completed tomorrow, the plates have turned out to have to be bigger, on the floor due to the fact that the rust was worse than it looked, not rotton through but i know MOT guys like to try and get there tool through the floor so bigger plate being fitted to keep them happy.
same with a patch on the inner wing next to the turret, no rust hole next to it, but surface rusty, and seeing as a grinder wont fit in its eaiser to just plate it over to keep MOT man happy.
new rocker cover gasket fitted, new oil filter, and new manifold to downpipe gasket fitted too today.
didnt change oil as i forgt to take it but will drain and replace that tomorrow and i may fit the fuel filter (small inline one).
those who know, the xr2 never came with a fuel filer, hence why people still think fords suffer with sucking cr@p up from the tank which yeah they used to, but not now, and being 22 years old car theres bound to be some cr@p in the tank
she will also have the water drained and fresh 50/50 anti freeze mix put in as it dont look like its got any in at the mo
as a matter of course the cam belt is being done tomorrow too
thats about it really for now
