xr2 rebuild 2 litre made me mind up now 22/3/12
Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC
Ok bit of a strange update this one as it’s not technically on the car…
Basically, the work shop/ garage is separated into 3 sections which have always been known as the garage, the studio and the workshop
The picture below shows the layout.
Anyhow, due to space issues and the fact I have been meaning to sort it out for some time (years) I got round to it and have been doing so for the last 7weeks with 2 weeks off due to my op, and I have been doing what I can this week and will be doing more next week then its 2 weeks off again due to another op.
The studio is full of engineering equipment and tools, the workshop is or was full of stuff, a lot being crap, so much so that there’s been roughly 4-5 tonne of scrap metal that’s been sorted out and dumped, and some bits like the machine took a long time to get out due to the weight, space, and things like floors that needed attention but so far its fairly clear and ready for the studio to be cleared out so ill have the garage and studio clear, and I have a FRST going in the studio for work, and the xr2 will go back into the garage and put on a mobile spit (when I make it) and then both cars can be worked on at the same time.
Things I’ve had to contend with have been broken wooden floors, rotten wood on the walls to the point a few supports for the back wall have rotted and the roof has had to be propped up, well not “had to be” but better safe than sorry, and the roof leaking due to the corrugated steel rusting away above the workshop.
Also the wiring in the place was just deadly, all the 3 phase power has been shut off and all wiring ripped out to the back workshop, only 2 sockets will be put in below the distribution board when its changed, 1 for the spot welder, the other for the compressor, the distribution board for the 240 in the back workshop has been changed also as ceramic fuses went out when knower gave up the arc! LOL
Anyhow, the studio is going to be sheeted up, basically the roof is high, just as it is in the garage, in fact the garage roof is higher, were talking over 20 foot!, and trying to warm that place in the winter is a failing mission, so once I finish clearing the studio and the xr2 is out a plastic sheeting ceiling is being put up about 8-9 foot up, this will stop any odd drips from leaks that can’t be got at or that may crop up (studio has welsh slate roof) and hopefully it will be easier to heat come the winter months.
There’s plenty to do still, the studio has to be cleared out and a section of wooden floor that remained when I concreted needs replacing/made stronger more lights put up and the floor sealed or carpeted
Anyway to give you a rough idea of what’s been going on I’ll let the pictures do the talking, there in a sort of before and after order but I didn’t get any of how it was when I first got cracking, I mean you could barely get in there lol
JP is me, DP is my dad
And basically as it was left this evening ready to be loaded up with stuff from the studio
And this is what I got to clear out of the studio, for those that have followed my FRST rebuild, the below pic is the room I done my RS in
With RS
Now
Some random pics of the xr2
And last but not least, the reason I have updated this thread with so much crap, is because I did actually do something on the xr2 today too!!!
I fully removed the old Ariel off it!
Yes that’s all I done and why, because I couldn’t pick up my favourite radio station so the car Ariel was mounted and a cable run down the inside of the roof to the radio, and now I get it! And won’t be brain washed by radio 1 no more this is by far the best thing I done today LOL

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
Ha ha, no more Radio 1 is always a good thing! Top work there, nice setup you've got there - that's my aim one day, to have a proper garage/workshop on my own land. Using MOD property/equpipment to do my projects is all well and good but there's nothing like being able to crack on with them at home in private with no interruptions

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
deffo better with no radio one and bloody fern cotton banging on talking $hit with her fake laugh, god its enough to drive a man to top him self!
think thats prob why having the snip didnt hurt, i was numbed from all that radio 1
i agree with ya on the workshop mate, it is good to have the space to do as you please, its not mine i must say, i dont own the workshop etc nor the land its on, its belongs for a uncle and aunt that live on the mainland, but tbh, its basicly mine to do with as i please untill such time as they choose to sell, or at worst, the back wall falls in bringing the roof down with it, which i reckon would of been within a couple years had we not got on and done something
aunt and uncle will never use it for anything now anyway as there in there 70's and 80's so im making the most of it while i can, rent free too, rude not to plus me being up there all the time im keeping a eye on the place so it works well, we both get something out of it, and im thankful they let me use it too, just wish i had asked earlier then i could of done the RS start to finish in there, but no matter
only draw back to this place is the access, its grass, and when you have a lot or rain or its winter time, its a nightmare, the amount of times ive got boged down

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC
jayrs ::lol: your be ok mate, b0llocks will be black and blue, your hurt but its all good.
you being knokced out or you gunna be awake for it? i was awake for first one, only bit that hurt was trying to find the tube, once they find them and clamp them to the skin then they inject you and within a minute there cutting, finding the tubes fells like someone is squeezing your b0llocks, its not the most plesent feeling i must say
still, when i go back in on the 6th sep, im being knocked out, no choice in the matter wonder why being knocked out this time though.....
i can honestly say, in my years on this forum and all the threads ive looked at, i have never seen one go off topic about ball bags being chopped until now
Thanks mate i gotta be awake so happy days! Hope your next op goes better mate! On a different note well done on the progress with the car and workshop mate!

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
tbh i would rather be awake this time, they say i cant smoke a fag for 2 days before the op my fcuking ar$e, ill stay up late the night before and have my last one about 1am
cheers fella, long way to go on it, its a nightmare, but when things get left they go down hill rather fast
spent a fe hours today clearing the side of the workshop outside, ivy and crap grown all over it and blocking light, and is growning all over the roof
still, no pain no gain, with it all cleared, in the winter the extra light will be better and it wont fell so inclosed if that makes sense.
heating is on the cards for this place too, im not gunna say too much right now as i dunno how its gunna pan out, but maybe got some bits coming next week (for free ) and the garage/studio could have central heating but were see what happens

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
just looked through this start to here, aned fcuk me, how little i have done
anyhow, had last week off the workshop, and the rest of this week due to going back in hospital and having the snip for the second time in 5 week! lets hope it been done right this time, but fcuk me its hurting this time round, lets hope thats the end of that.
workshop wise, its getting there, next week i will be making a mobile stand up for the xr2 out of steel box section as it needs to come out shortly, and i just as well do that while im healing, then once the white Rs is in there and the xr2 is back in, i can make and mount it on a spit and with any luck, crack on with it!
only update so far is the head light and fog light i was bidding on, and won, arrived ok
for now, ill keep eyes open for more parts

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC
no update, still havent done anything on the xr2, but i gotta say, with what ive been doing to the workshop i can wait to get cracking on it, although the white RS will be done first still, i'll have room etc to do a bit on the xr along the way too.
the updates above have said about what ive done and what needed doing, and so far its near enough done, and its had a lot done, new 3 phase board fitting, painted, the plastic has been put up, to remind you, this for making it easier to heat, and it gets hot in there now , lights all redone, a lot of re-wiring has been done as the old wiring was past its best.
anyhow, some below pics to remind you of what it was like, followed by some new pics, the new pics have been taken over the last couple of weeks up untill yesterday/today
what it was like
to what its like now
one compressor was busted, the pully wheel had snapped off, well snapped the crank, and the cyclinder on the other, well, just look at it, boiler plate, plenty strong enough, but was found to have a bit of mank in the bottom of it, so i made a good one out the 2.
that hydrovane compressor was developed in the 50's, and its one of the first 2 hydrovane made, bloody good compressor that, build date not known, but they were made between the 60's and 80's, but knowning my uncle, he prob got it in the 60's, or at worst, start of the 70's, not bad going eh
thats it for now

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
cheers fella.
when i looks back at the pics from when i first started i think, jesus, it was a right $hit hole
it pained me to paint over the red on the wall and door with the white paint
got the cable out to run into the back workshop which is where the compressor is going to be, and found its fcuked!, the ouer covering is cracking, inside is ok, but its being dumped, well taken to the scrap yard with a load of other old wiring, and that will help to pay for the new 12 meters of 2.5 swa cable needed
i'll be testing the 3 phase spot welder later this week, hope it works

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
i always made sure there was space around the fly oress, fantsatic bit of kit
i havent made anything as such yet as ive still been sorting bits and bobs out, nothing major, call it a snagging list if you will, but its basicly all done now.
i fitted the new 3 phase MCB that will feed the compressor and lathe today and run it up, and put the compressor in place which is on the second floor in the back workshop, fcuking great heavy c*nting thing, broke one of the steps going up the stairs, so got that to sort next time im out there , but only bits left to do, is level the lathe, give it a bit of a service, (clean down, oil up etc) and fit the carpet to the studio, the back workshop still needs a little sorting and re-arranging to make use of everything in there, but thats not important and would only take a couple hours anyhow but that can wait till i got nothing better to do.
apart from that, got 1/2 tonne -3/4 tonne of steel scrap right outside the door and prob a tonne of rubbish and old oil cans (some full) etc to get rid off before i can get a car in or out, so yeah, its basicly done now.
took longer than expected, but still

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
So your basicly all set then?? Do you have a milling machine in there too???
I'v just litterely finnished my 2 odd years training and got into my first proper workshop. Already planning a few cheeky jobs for my cars lol ( found a cheeky hydraulic pipe bending machine hidden away in the back of our gas bay complete with monster 3" formers. ) I'm thinking stainless manifolds

sounds good mate, you get the pipe for nothing?
i do have a milling machine, but its still not in the workshop, been threatening it for years but still not in there, so it will be in there when its in there
if i remember rightly, theres a vertical, hoziontal and one that does both waiting to go in.
motors all prob fcuked now though hope not

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
Yea I can get free pipe but better to bring my own in. i dont want them to think I'm taking the piss.
We got a massive "VMC" cnc miller, EZtrack cnc miller, couple of cnc laithes, manual laithe and 2 bridgeport vertical millers. think one is universal thaugh as it has a swiveling table and we got a converter for horizontal on the other one. Best machines ever!!! lol
Here some piccys of noisy bay and that pipe bender
.
We sooo have the best trade on earth lol

kool man. Get one hooked up. My mate has bin doing axle spacers for mk2 golfs. He made a cnc program for them n just runs it a few times a month n flogs em on one of the clubs he's in. Good for a bit of spare cash if you have time.
Looking forward to seing this xr2 getting underway again anyways mate.

im not lucky enough to have any cnc machines, but the plan is to run off some bits on the machines to make a bit of cash, as i said in a past post, got a lathe up and running now, so will be running some bits off soon, might do some T3 oil returns, caliper spacers and bits like that for now

Re: xr2 rebuild 2 litre still waiting on some TLC wierd update
no updates mate, its on standby untill clarks car is done then i will crack on with it.
its very unlikly it will be completed this year, or at least in time for any shows, the main hold up with it is the bonnet, converting it to open "the right" way, i have some different hinges in mind to try and a mod for the bonnet it self to stiffen it up as its far to flexable and im certain thats most of the problem im facing, but will see how it goes when i get back on it
as for paint, im thinking i might use celle on this one if i can get it, my local paint place dont do automotive celle no more, if i have to, then yeah, i will go 2 pac.
2 pac is good stuff, but wear a mask mate, even if you paint it outside, i know your wear a mask when painting anyway, but make it a good mask, thats stuff is nasty

a sprayer that does it every day will prob disagree with me, but celle is easier.
you can get a shine from it, and you dont need to laquer it, you can if you want.
2pac is good, and your get good results from it, even ouitside of a booth, i painted my RS with 2pac, just dont use too much pressure.
you wont die from using it, well i guess you could if you breated it for a while, but get ya self a mask like a fly mask and your be fine, but you should use a mask with any spraying, and a mask like a fly mast with filter than contains carbon i find better
