XR2i Tuning

Postby Mike on Mon Mar 03, 2003 8:25 am

Just bought an 2i but I need ur help with the questions below, please...

1. What is the best induction kit to get?

2. Do I go for a full exhaust system or just the backbox? either way, what is the best one to get?

3. I want to lower it, but do I need to change the shocks, or can I get away with just changing the springs?

4. Any other tuning mods you can recommend?

Your help will be appreciated.

Performance wise I don't think theres much in it between several induction kits of the same type, so I'd say its more up to personal taste rather then tech reasons. Now if you start considering cotton gauze vs. foam, apparently the 1st type flows marginally better and the 2nd type holds more dirt before starting to clog up. Thats the result of several tests I've read so its more than an oppinion, but its still discussable.

Exhaust... the XR2i standard one is supposed to be very well designed so if you're after performance theres no real reason to change it unless you're planning on modding your engine alot. I'd say go for the backbox [ERRR] you'll get the same looks and performance as with a full system.

You want to lower your car for looks or handling? If its just 4 looks, go for the springs. If you want your car to handle properly get a full kit from a good maker and don't lower it too much (25 to 40 mm would be a good goal, unless you're going for coilovers and a camber adjustment kit). Another thing: the mk3s chassis seems to be rather soft so any improvement you could make on this area would be very beneficial on both comfort and handling departments.

Good luck with the new car!

Well explained

Ive got a piper x induction kit, ive also had a K&N and IMO the piper one makes a better sound, as for performance there will be no noticeable difference, as for the exhaust I have a standard middle section with a magnex back box. If you want better performance and have a some spare cash go for a modifed head and cam or even a chip.

I'm running -60mm lowering spings on standard shocks with poly bushes.
