Zetec-S rear beam and Focus rear discs on the Type-R

Postby AdrianFRST on Sun Jul 20, 2003 10:33 pm

Beam me up - Type-R gets handling and braking for the 21st century...

Image

- Focus rear stub axel assemblies, discs, pads and calipers £90 total
- 2001 model Mk5 Zetec-S rear beam. £70
- Escort Mk5 RS2000 handbrake cable £20

Total cost for improved handling and rear disc conversion - £180. Bit of a bargain eh!

Why Focus rear discs won't fit a mk3:

Image

Only one of the four bolt holes line up. The pattern on the Focus is identical to the mk5, and the later mk5 beams are a direct fit on the mk3. mk3 drums won't fit a mk5 beam.

Mk3 at the back, Mk5 at the front:

Note stronger gusseting.

Impressive :o

21st century handling at 60% of the cost of using RS2000 or 2wd items. Too bad is all to late for me to carry this conversion out....

Well done chaps :)

good good....now get a decent turbocharged lump in there! :P ...oh and stop hitting the rev limiter when reversing out of your drive! ;)

Thanks - Sunny.
Do you have any idea what 178.8mph feels like in a Fiesta? 2000 lb of pressure per square inch per second pushing back on your face. It feels like god himself is trying to rip the skin off your skull while someone lands a 747 on your chest.

Longer flexi hoses, that's it.

Be aware that this setuo is 10mm per side wider than drums. Fortunately the car had 10mm spacer blocks on and the necccessary arch work to clear.

Adrian is this just a matter of unbolting the old stuff and replaceing it with new, you didn't have to modify the rear beam to get it to fit did you?
Was goin to get the Fiesta Centre rear disc kit next month but if I can do this and get the reat beam for less £ I know which I'll be gettin :D

Yes.

No mods to the beam at all.

At the moment we don't have the handbrake cable functional (Ford didn't have it in stock, will be here this week). Shouldn't be too much hassle to fit.

Prices will depend on your breaker.

If you put the beams up on their end, and hold the bottom, you can twist the frst beam with arb quite alot,
do the same with the mk5 beam and it won't twist at all, its sooo much stiffer.

As Ade says, it doesn't need an arb.

yeah, when i did mine, the half moon thing was hitting the floor of the car, as it was bigger on the new cable. So i put the smaller one off the fiesta cable, and that was the only tweak needed.

cool ;)
Mine was supposed to have rear focus discs a yr ago, but scrappy said to me £100 for pair of rear hubs / discs / callipers etc... I persuaded parents to pay (safety issue...), then when I went to collect, they changed minds to £100 a side. grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Ade, i've been toying with doing this with these parts to my fiesta but i kept selling on the bits for escort conversions ( ££'s ) Now i have run out of bits for my car!! !!
What you need to do now is to get the St170 caliper carriers and discs, then you'll have 278mm rear discs! you can retain your caliper as all the do is move the holes out on the carrier to make the caliper sit further out  , the caliper is actually the same ( also used on the St160 Puma )

I'm using 20mm spacers on the drum..

Does fitting the wider track rear beam move the wheel away from the wheel much, just thinking cause if i would need to keep the large spacer, it could cause major problems with my arches

Plus i assume, all Focus 2L large brake conversions will fit happily on this
