As mentioned before, these stub axles add 10mm per side.

We took 10mm spacer blocks off so the track was identical to it was before (20mm wider than standard).

it's woth mentioning the thickness of the disk at this point in time as it's 5mm thick so strictly speaking the track is 30mil wider in total.

I am still yet to use my car as i need to replace the windscreen and i have a few gearbox troubles...

Plus the numptys at ford have given me 3 handbreak cables now and i still dont have the right one... Fingers crossed for tomorrow...

then i will let you know what happens when i give the car a thrashing...

If you're still fighting handbrake cables, try the FRP one. If you're fighting Ford parts dept staff, then good luck to you!

RS2000 handbrake cable fitted today. A tad long but nothing a bit of tweaking won't sort out. Need to route it slightly different as it's shorter on one side.

Rear flexi hoses replaced with ones from the front. A bit long but will do until braided ones are made up.

Bled it all up and tested

Slightly longer pedal travel.

The back won't step out and it wouldn't swap ends despite locking the fronts up in both the wet and the dry.

No noticeable improvement in braking really (it was mental stopping power before though ;)) Maybe a little less nose dive.

The rear beam

WOW!!

Such a difference. Grips like glue round roundabouts and corners, with the standard beam you can feel it begin to want to go, this is much more solid.

Rock solid stable through sweeping corners at high speed, no creeping motion or instability like the std one.

This + IH lower arms = awesome.

Ka / Puma / mk4 and early mk5 are all different to this one and will require mods to the shocks and may not fit the discs.

As stated you need a 2001 model mk5 one.

Oh btw Ade, late mk4's have the right beam, and as far a I'm aware all mk5's should have the right beam.

You can tell the beam you need as it will come from a car with the square headrests (revised mk4 1999 V plate - ciggarette lighter on the dash as apposed to ashtray).

Just one question left...

Is it possible to place 13' weels with this modification? or no?

because in belgium, we have a sort of MOT, and can't pass with weels bigger dan 14'. I have 15' but change them each year to go at the MOT (replace my 15' with 13'), If I have to change all, just for MOT... il will be too much work each time...

As long as the discs are no bigger than 240mm you should just be able to squeeze them in.

I *think* they're 250 or 251 mm... something around that mark. Bigger on the ST and RS versions (270mm or so) which means you can't get any of them inside 13"s.

Getting a cheap set of 2nd hand 14" steels and respective tyres just to get you to the test might be a good move... I'm sure it won't set you back too much, and it would also allow you to run 260 mm discs at the front with a RS2k or Mondeo setup.

So how big are the focus discs?

How big are my 1.1 front discs be?

How hard would it be to upgrade the front to something like the back focus discs?

I have no idea about these things.

1.1 has solid front discs - 240mm or something

A straight swap would be 260mm discs and calipers from an Escort RS2000, Puma or Zetec-S

Those apparently all fit right on and would produce much better stopping power

so in essence, the main essentials needed are:

-a mk5 zetec-s rear beam
-any 2 litre focus calipers and discs
-and a sutiable handbrake cable (i.e. escy RS2000 mk5)

Is that it for the main parts?

didn't the zetec s come with disks on the back any way ?? if so can't u just use them instead of doing the focus brakes so therefore u wouldn't have the extra track so no arch/wheel touching problems lol

MarcD: To actually answer you Q, you should be able to bolt a mk5 rear axle and drums straight on.

All you should need is a late mk5 fiesta rear beam with drums still on and that's it!

Should cost less than £50, mine was £35.

Despite what people say i cannot find ANY difference between my std mk5 rear beam and my Zetec S rear beam. No difference in stiffness at all, it looks identical.

Morning Guys,

Got a few questions on this conversion which i hope someone can help with, sorry to bring up an old post.

A friend of mine has been ringing breakers to try and get hold of a Zetec-S rear beam and he's been told that they did two phases, Phase one has drums and phase two has discs.

Now, my first question, can anyone confirm that this is true and that the phase two beam will still directly bolt to the mk3.
Do the standard FRST wheels fit this phase two setup?

Thanks for any help, i may have mroe questions so be warned :)

Ive now been informed by a couple of breakers and a member off here  that there is no Zetec-S's with rear discs. The breaker that told me about the two phases must have been mistaken  .

So it looks like we're back to square one lol. Zetec-S rear beam with Focus or RS2000 rear discs :Q

I'll get searching again :)

So, lets say i've got the following situation-

FRST with GAZ Coilovers
and i want to fit a Zetec-S rear beam and retain the Zetec-S's Drum brakes.

1) Would the wheel sit in a different place?
2) Would the dampers bolt straight to the beam?
3) Anything extra/different needed to connect up the drum brakes? (like can i use FRST cables and FRST goodridge braided lines)

Thanks for any and all help, i want to improve the cars handling, but i'm not to concerned about fitting rear discs, i find the drums more than fine for me (Focus ST170's at the front)

Cheers

StreetDragster:

1, The wheel would sit in a different place, the Z-S drums are narrower than FRST drums, so you'll need spacers.

2, The dampers will bolt straight onto any phase 2 fiesta rear beam (all phse 2 rear beams are identical)

3, Don't know anyone who has actually put mk5 drums on mk3, but from memory the brake pipe fittings and h/brake cable fittings are in the same position. Don't know if fitments are the same tho'

Post up if you do the convo. Nice to know if it can be done.
