whats better a oil return in the block or in the sump?

If you put it in the sump you usually have to get it welded. When i did mine i drilled a hole in the block then tapped the hole to suit a big brass fitting with tapperd threads to seal it

so is an oil return in the block more common?
i can go either way sump or block wots better?.
i do have a sump with an oil return in it already

As low as possible without returning the oil below the oil level in the sump.
