Zetec Turbo People- Oil

Postby StreetDragster on Mon Mar 22, 2004 11:04 am

Hi All,

What oil should i get for use in a 2100cc 16v zetec turbo conversion? 10w60 castrol rs ok or should i use thinner oil?
Zetec turbo conversion has stepped up a gear after i blew a piston ring in cylinder number 2 at the weekend.

Thanks

Matt

P.S Anyone know of another selling an RS1800 inlet manifold and throttle body?

How did you blow a ring mate???

Please tell me you gapped them propperly before you fitted them? And not just straight out the packet like someone else I know did

Easy mistake I suppose if your not an engine builder :(

I'd personally use a Valvoline Racing oil....10W40 if possible.

Did a quick search but couldn't find the zetec turbo oil spec, plenty on the NA zetec oil though.

Hi Phil, don't know about the gapping of the rings because the engine hadn't been apart since i bought the car, i had the pedal flat to the knocker in 2nd going uphill with 4 people in and its was fine, but when i stopped at a mini roundabout the car was running on three at idle. Got home and compression tested the CVH, 150psi on 1, 3+4, 62psi on number 2, took the head off. Head gasket was fine, cylinder head pressure tested fine. So i put parafin on cylinders 2 and 3 and after 30mins number three hadn't changed levels and number two had seeped all its parafin. So rather than rebuild the 1600 engine i've decided to pull my finger out my arse and get the zetec turbo in :)

Fancy give me/us a quick lesson on gapping piston rings? :)

Thanks

Matt

1st and 2nd compression rings must be gapped about 1 inch down the bore, turbo engines req larger gap than n/a due to more heat, hotter pistons, leading to rings expanding more, normal gap is around .5mm i think...
