Zetec turbo - vernier pulleys and STD. 2.0L Mondeo cams

Postby disc on Tue Aug 23, 2005 2:24 pm

Hi!
I'm building ZetecTurbo at home and have a question about cam timing.
Let's say that we have ZT:
1 800 cc Zetec (Silvertop);
ERST T3;
proper IC;
8,5:1 CR;
STD pistons (copper decompression plate, without gasket, or may be 1);
>350 cc/min. injectors;
STD. Escort Zetec inlet (alloy);
STD 2.0L Mondeo cams;
Ported head;
Proper mappable ECU (Megasquirt - fuel and ignition);
and all other needed sybsystems (cooling, charging ect.).

Let's say that after proper tuning we can get ~240HP. What if we put vernier pulleys and do them to needed setings, how much that we help for getting more HP? And how much degrees cams must be rotated (inlet/exhaust) to achieve best performance.
I'm asking that cause I'm very deep in DIY business and trying to get as much as possible (safe) HP from my engine without spending silly money for aftermarket cams (parts). I can make adjustable puleys at home, but didn't know how to adjust them.
Here is a link to american ZetecTurbo Focus (Blacktop Zetec) install and some details for cam timing and achieved HPs.

Few months ago hemingway showed his adjustable pulleys, but he use TB's and NOS.

Anyone with ZT and adjustable pulleys?
Thanks.

Its hard to say what to do when it comes to timing cams when the engine is not std, unless someone has already tried it with the exact same engine you got.

The best thing to do is try it and see how good turns up on the dyno.
Since its a DOHC you can advance/retard only one cam without upsting the timing of the other.

Get a dyno graph of your engine with the std cams on std timing. Then advance 4º one cam and dyno again. Try as many setups you can and see what suits best your driving demands.

When timing some cams on an unknown engine you better turn the engine by hand before firing it up just to see if piston to valve and valve to valver clearence is ok.... just to be safe!

P.S.- Alloy vernier pulleys are really bad to try differente timing setups since they wear really quick and tend to brake!!!

It's dead simple - You never gain more over factory cam timing settings as they were optimised for the broadest spread of power. Swinging either cam will affect the power band, but generally narrows/ reduces the torque output over the full range. It also can have a negative effect upon turbo response, depending on which way you rotate.

As a DIY'er, I hope you have realised that as the factory pulleys on a Zetec aren't dowelled, you can set them as you like (but takes a little longer than with a vernier pulley pairing.

I'll do you reprofiles to my spec for sensible ££

@BUTRE:
My point was if someone has already tried it then let's share his experience.

@Areasix:
Thanks! That was the needed answer.

I know you (from Internet) as very reputable tuner and wil be glad to have cams with your spec but I live in Bulgaria (EVERYTHING is very expensive here, as well as imported items - my ERST exhaust manifold from Ebay.co.uk cost me a fortune to be imported last year), so DIY way is the best way here.

Off topic I know, but why does importing to Bulgaria cost so much?

Mainly because transport fees, also insurance. I have friends (bulgarians) that live and work in GB. 9 of 10 presents, toys or whatever you can imagine can be sent to family didn't reach Bulgaria - that is another solid reason to keep away from importing stuffs in Bulgaria personaly. Then you must use couriers and they charge for this properly! An example is my ERST exhaust manifold - ebay price 35 pounds, transport fees 70!!! Fortunately as I mentioned above I have friends in GB - they bring manifold in Bulgaria when they was here last winter.

Shocking, I can air freight an entire gearbox door to door from England to the states for about £150! I'm surprised no ones not tried to corner the market by providing a cheaper service.
