2000
The cage is in. It's a FIA International Spec item from Rollcentre
Racing custom made with an extra bar across the backstays to secure
the harnesses, and also specified without the mounting points for the
front section and door bars, as a front section wouldn't clear the door
builds. The cage is designed for motorsport and fits very closely to the
shell of the car. As a result of this the rear quarter panel trims, foam
rear suspension turret covers and interior sill trims need to be
modified to clear the mounting points.
September 2000
The new interior is underway, a pair of Sparco Evos and Sabelt
Top Formula 4 point harnesses are now in. These are proper FIA approved
ones with the aircraft style quick release and 3" shoulder straps.
Fitting was simple as the eye bolts simply replace the bolts that hold
the standard seatbelt mountings and the harnesses clip into the eye
bolts. A rear bench from an 1992 XR2i 16v is in at the moment, but when
the cage goes in the rears will come out.
Fitting the seats was not so easy. Sparco don't do a tailored
subframe to mount the Evo seat into a Mk3 Fiesta, so I had to adapt
Sparco universal side mounting frames to fit a set of Ford seat runners.
This involved re-drilling mounting holes as the hole spacing on the side
mounts don't fit the holes on the runners. It is also necessary to cut a
notch out on one mount to clear the sliding adjustment lever. Once in
place the seats can be adjusted forwards and backwards like the standard
items.
